Who is this course for?
This course is designed for graduate-level pre-licensed and licensed mental health professionals for continuing education purposes.
Description:
Early play therapy with children ages 0–5 requires a uniquely attuned, developmentally informed, and relationship-based approach. In this 2-hour training, participants will explore how anti-oppressive and mindfulness-based reflective principles can guide early-phase play therapy to support both the child and the caregiving system. Emphasizing the co-regulatory power of play, this session highlights the therapist’s role in engaging caregivers not just as collateral informants but as essential partners in the healing journey. We will discuss how to invite caregiver participation into the play while mindfully attending to caregiver stress, cultural context, and readiness. Practical examples of dyadic and individual playful interventions will be offered to support caregiver-child connection, emotional regulation, and therapeutic alliance in the earliest phases of treatment.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe at least two key components of an anti-oppressive, relationship-based play therapy approach for children ages 0–5.
- Identify ways to meaningfully engage caregivers in early-phase play therapy, including through dyadic and parallel interventions.
- Apply at least two playful mindfulness strategies that support caregiver-child co-regulation or strengthen the therapeutic alliance.
- Describe the therapist’s role in centering caregiver well-being and cultural context as part of early engagement.
